What are syrups?

Syrups are a thick liquid that primarily consists of a solution of sugar in water. They can be added to drinks and cooking to improve the flavour.

There are two main types of syrup used in drinks and cooking, simple syrup and flavoured syrup.

A simple syrup is often used by bartenders to sweeten cocktails. It is typically made of a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water. It is also common for simple syrup to be used in cooking and baking.

A flavoured syrup is often used to make flavoured drinks and cocktails. Often they are infused simple syrups, and can be infused with herbs, spices and aromatics.

It is common to use syrups in drinks. Some easy ways to incorporate them into drinks include:

  • Cocktails - add flavoured syrups to cocktails to enhance the taste or add some colour to your drink
  • Water - add a fruit syrup to water to create a tasty drink that can be great for children and adults alike

Cooking

You can get creative when it comes to adding syrups to food:

  • Baking - simple syrup is often used in baking to sweeten desserts, but flavoured syrups can also be experimented with to add new flavours to dishes
  • Condiment - Try a drizzle of a flavoured syrup on top of a cake or ice cream for an extra flavour kick

Raspberry mojito with raspberry syrup

Ingredients

Method : Add your lime wedges, raspberries, raspberry syrup and Williamine into a mojito glass and mix. Add your mint leaves, crushed ice, and top with lemonade. Decorate with fresh raspberries and mint.

Caramel pancakes with caramel syrup

Ingredients

  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 1tbsp vegetable oil
  • Dash of caramel syrup
  • Toppings to serve

Method : Mix together your plain flour, eggs, milk, vegetable oil and caramel syrup in a bowl until you have a smooth batter. Leave to rest for 30 minutes, then heat a frying pan over a medium heat with a little extra vegetable oil. Once hot, cook your pancakes for around 1 minute on each side (be careful when you flip!). Finish with your favourite toppings

Strawberry lemonade with strawberry syrup

Ingredients

  • Lemonade
  • Strawberry syrup
  • Fresh strawberry for decoration

Method : Fill a glass with lemonade, top with a splash of strawberry syrup, and decorate with a fresh strawberry.
